YAA indoor championships Sunday 9th March

Three Airedale archers took part in the county championships on the day after the Airedale finals:

Trevor Astley, Robert Powell and David O'Carroll but none managed to make the winners podium.

5th Trevor Astley Adwalton Moor 60 423 7

7th Robert Powell Aire Valley 58 385 4
8th David O'Carroll Adel 58 353 3

FINAL SHOOT - SATURDAY 8TH MARCH

The competitors were greated by a low lying arch of a rainbow hovering over Keighley. Several regular archers were missing from the final shoot and we can only imagine that they were hotly chasing the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Whilst those inside had an equally challenging search for Gold- though Trevor Astley did mange 8 to beat Barry's season record of 7.

The competition was shot under ever darkening skies and the noise of the rain reminded us why we put up with shooting indoors. Nevertheless, our thanks go to Aire Valley Archers for putting up with us once a month as we shoot to find out who are the best archers in Airedale.

The Lady Paramount was once again Rene from Aire Valley Archers who started the presentations by awarding 400 certificates to all those who had scored over 400 during the season

The final results were:

Team: Oddfellows 4841
Lady: Ann Shooter 1142
Gentleman: Lewis Mitchell 1304
Jack & Jill: Hilary & Barry Lydon 2252
Highest unrewarded score: Duncan Bladon 423
Most improved: Keith Shooter +98

NEW WEBSITE

The league website has moved to our new home thanks to Chris Furminger.

NEW LEAGUE BADGE

The intention right from the start was that the League should have its own badge. David and Robert have been tossing ideas about and finally agreed on  a device that had a gauntlet grasping three arrows to represent the challenge to all longbowmen in Airedale, the three wavy lines to represent the River Aire and the Yorkshire Rose. A banner reading friendship and rivalry -  a motto that underpins the league.

Thanks to Chris "Chips" Furlinger from Bowmen of Adel who put the design together for us. We are now enquiring about having the badge available on clothing- watch this space.

JANUARY SHOOT- SATURDAY 12th JANUARY 2008

There were some closely contested targets in a very cold hall. The sherry break was eagerly awaited. Four archers scored over 400.

The January shoot was won by Oddfellows with 1561 followed by AVA with 1504.

The highest score of the season moves to Lewis Mitchell with 432. Barry continues with most golds. No-one has yet managed to join the Hall of Fame for three golds in an end.

The contest for most improved archer is warming up. David Aikin has improved by 88; Keith Shooter (shooting a pb in January of 352) has improved by 89 but in the lead is Bruce Knight with 95.

Best scores were:
Lady:
Ann Shooter 366
Gentleman:
Lewis Mitchell 432

Archers to watch:
Rachel & Brian Bell- clearly sharpening their points for the new Jack & Jill trophy which was announced at the January contest.

DECEMBER SHOOT- SATURDAY/SUNDAY 8/9th DECEMBER 2007

No the shoot wasn't over two days but archers had the choice of shooting on either the Saturday or at the Cristmas Cracker on Sunday. Some chose to shoot on both days but their first score counted for the league. 25 archers took part.

Those shooting on Sunday missed out on the sherry break - but then perhaps their scores were all the better for it?

The December shoot was won by Oddfellows with 1552 with White Rose in second place with 1516.

The highest score for the season is 423 by Duncan Bladen. Most golds 7 by Barry Lydon.

Full results on the results page.

FIRST SHOOT 2007/08 SEASON- SATURDAY 10th NOVEMBER 2007

The new indoor season got off to a terrific start with 22 longbow archers shooting from the start. This belied the disappointment that only two teams finished with the Oddfellows scoring 1558 and Aire Valley Archers 1480. The Best Score by a lady was Ann Shooter with 390 and for gentlemen Trevor Astley with 416.

As usual we had a sherry break with cake at half time which suited some but not all as the dipping scores showed. Thanks to Ann for the photographs.

END OF SUMMER SHOOT Western round

The Autumn Equinox is upon us again and the days are shortening at both ends, but for Airedale longbow archers this was an ideal time to hold a wake for the summer just passed. As the archers arrived at the old St.Ives archery range they were greeted by the horses already in their winter overcoats and the whistling of a Sparrowhawk waiting to swoop on any exhausted longbowman should he or she falter in this challenge.

But as the sun broke through the clouds the mood became cheerier and the true spirit of fraternity amongst longbowmen was once again apparent. Few questions were asked about the need for six sighters as we knew the answer was "Because..." . Well it was a GNAS shoot and that's what happens. The arrows were soon flying and there were few excuses on such a fine autumn day. Perhaps some archers were distracted by the gentle cackling of the wildfowl on the lake or the sound of grass being torn by the horses from the adjacent meadow. Arrows got microscopically closer to the centre of the gold and by lunchtime it was announced that someone had pierced something called the inner gold -  a distant country for many of us. Clearly we were going to have to do some serious shooting in the afternoon.

Robert was clearly determined to keep the entire luncheon, that Aire Valley Archers had provided, for himself, and called us to shoot at the wonky wand. But Ann pleaded a severe bout of hunger pains on behalf of all assembled and Robert was left to look after the wand as everyone else formed an orderly queue by the food tent.

Slowly we emerged dragging our feet to shoot at the wand and after two elimination rounds only Lewis Mitchell could pierce the ever narrowing band of the wand. [see photographs]

And so to 50 yards- who could possibly miss? Well dear reader I have to report that many achieved this distinction whilst others managed to get one, two and even three arrows into the gold. And so, as the rain clouds threatened to dump their contents on this fine green field, the shooting came to its conclusion. Bows were unbraced and carefully stowed in their bags. Mental notes were made to remember to re-serve strings and re-glue points.

The scores were collected and the team scores calculated by David and Robert using only paper and pencil. The raffle prizes were distributed and the results announced:

First Team:              Aire Valley Archers
First Lady:                Ann Shooter
First Gentleman:    Lewis Mitchell

A vote of thanks was given to Robert and Aire Valley Archers for their hospitality and good food and it was agreed by all that we should all meet again at the same time and place next year.

See the photographs page for pictures and results page for full results.

FINAL INDOOR SHOOT- SATURDAY 10th MARCH 2007

The grand finale of the league was held as usual at Aire Valley Archers. Everybody arrived on time signifying this was something special. Everyone had the chance to improve on their previous scores and their overall position in the league as only the best scores counted and poorer scores could be discarded.BoA team

Bowmen of Adel had secured an unassailable position in the team event despite having missed  the February match when only two archers made up the team - but with the discard rule this did not affect their position. The individual competition for men was a different matter with at least five contenders and for the ladies a fight for second and third places was on the cards.
Renee presents team trophy to BoA team

The archers chose their targets at random and it was clear from the start that matters were being taken seriously as the inner ten was penetrated during sighters. Longbow being what it is, there where whoops of joy followed by dark mutterings of grief  as targets were inspected and scores recorded.  Even though scores for each dozen were recorded on the results board and it was clear that Robert Powell and David Hood were challenging each other for the honours of the day, it needed a computer to work out who would be the outright winner of the league and with a press of a key the computer revealed that two points separated the top three scorers with the tie for second and third place being decided by the score on the final day.
